Where is the Justice in Hellfire Punishment?

This is where I continuously demanded to Creator to give me answer until I “got it” somehow deeply implanted in my heart, through dilligent prayers and prayers.

So many people asked : why is it God put someone in hell for very long time or forever if human lives for example, for only 70 years?

First of all, we must follow the axiom clearly stated in Quran that Allah shall never ever be unjust to His servant.

 

Giving punishment to innocent is injustice.

Freeing criminal is injustice.

Giving punishment that is too heavy compared to the crime is injustice.

Giving punishment that is too light compared to the crime severity is also injustice.

Giving judgement verdict based on futile shallow evidences is also injustice.

 

Therefore, hell punishment is only the result of justice, not injustice, one-sidedness, or bigotry. Leave alone to Allah who will check someone very deeply and comprehensively in a way that no one can.

Consider that a person’s deeds and heart is like an encylopaedia of 1 million chapters. While one self only knew 2000 and other people only knew 500, Allah will check 1 million. Hidden and apparent, all of them with no iota left.

First of all, Quran tells us the kind of sinners who get hell are those who do not regret their sin even after in hell, as such that even if they were returned back to worldly life from hell, they will surely go back repeating their sins and transgressions (Quran 6:27-28). So can you imagine what kind of stubborn sinner is it that even after they see hell they do not regret???

 

Here is the verses,

“The Word (decree) changes not in My presence, and never shall I commit (even) the least injustice to My servant” *(Quran 50:29)

“And to all are (given) degrees according to the deeds which they (have done) and in order that (Allah) recompense their deeds, and no injustice will be done upon them” (Quran 46:19)

Now think about worldly life punishment. When you shoot someone to death, for example a mother of 4 children, it only takes 10 seconds to make her dead with your bullet. But there is no way you will be punished for 10 seconds, because of the severity of sin by killing her you ruin someone else’s life, which is her children.

So the punishment of hell goes in accordance to severity scale of the sin. Just like in worldly life, there is no justice in punishing someone stealing one apple with death sentence, or punishing a serial murderer with 1-week jail, even the hell punishment has gradation scales of severity, and this is why hell has layers such as Hawiyah, Huthamah, Jahim, etc where Jahannam is the heaviest of it.

As for disbelievers, it is all between a servant and Allah alone. Because belief and unbelief have many factors behind it.

The Islamic scholars divided non-muslims into 3 categories. First of all are those who never heard about Islam at all, and even if they heard it, it’s incomplete and not sufficed for one’s heart to embrace the faith wholly.

Of course if you’re not muslim, there is no way you embrace Islam right away just because you heard the word “Islam” alone with lack of sound information to convince you or to answer your question about God. This kind of people, their judgment is with Allah alone and it’s a matter of unseen.

Second category. They are people who heard or get the wrong information about Islam and therefore repulsed with it, e.g. surrounded by bad muslims, puritanical sects, misguided sects, Western mass media about Al Qaeda terrorism, from Salafi Jihadi, etc. The scholars are divided to two, between “they must try to seek the correct information about Islam” and the strongest one is it’s similar with the first category in Allah’s sight.

Third category. They are people who have known about Islam in complete manner and from sound information undeviated, their heart knows its truth and soundness, but refuse it anyway due to heart’s arrogance. This is the true disbeliever type who is threatened in Quran.

But apart from belief and unbelief, we must remember again that Allah is Most Knowing what’s inside a servant’s heart very deeply.

It could be a non-muslim is sincerely seeking for God, but stumbled upon religion other than Islam because of what his limited judgement concerned it as correct, with no intention of arrogance rejection of Islam.

It could be someone supposed to be muslim, but unfortunately he was surrounded by the wrong information about Islam or muslims speaking about Islam without knowledge, and it made him repulsed. While if he is surrounded by the correct environment, he could be pious muslim. It’s just his life path is not pointing toward that direction due to something outside his control.

It could be that someone is busy with survival and rat race, and therefore not giving too much time and attention to study religion. Even if he for example is Christian on paper, his heart is not really inclined toward Christianity either, other than following the environment around.

It could be someone who apparently disbeliever, actually sincerely seeking Allah deep from their heart, but do not know where to go to. He only sees hypocrisy in religious leaders, and therefore thinking that religions are equally corrupt as them.

For most non-muslims, to change religion is not as easy as folding hand upward. Comfort zones and all. But especially, how religion Islam can answer to major life and spirituality questions.

In Quran, unbelief is mostly directed toward the arrogant-based rejection toward God. So if we have gotten Islam in which our questions are answered about the truth, and we are convinced that it is truth, but deep in our heart we feel rebellion toward God and therefore reject it based on this arrogance, that is what counted as true unbelief.

So belief and unbelief is not something as black and white, not something that can be judged one-sidedly. The heart of Servant and their deeds is truly only Allah knows how to judge them. We have no right to claim as His representative on who deserves hell or who deserves to be freed from hell.

In the end, the purpose of religion is to help us remember our origin from the Divine Creator. That in our smallness and self-awareness, we will be conscious enough that our spirit and self-existence has originator.
